A catchment-based water resource decision-support tool for the United Kingdom
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the United Kingdom the Environment Agency of England and Wales have developed a number of initiatives to assist in implementing the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) including Catchment Management Strategies (CAMSs) and the Resource Assessment Management (RAM) Framework. These processes include setting river flow objectives and establishing best practice for the assessment of water resources at the catchment scale. Research jointly funded by the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) and the Agency has developed nationally applicable probabilistic models for estimating the natural flow regime in any UK catchment, as represented by flow duration statistics. These estimation procedures have been combined with methodologies to incorporate the impact of seasonal water use on a catchmentscale within the Low Flows 2000 software system. This system is used by the Agency to address real world water resource issues associated with the implementation of the Directive’s over-arching strategic initiatives.

Application of Fuzzy Technique for Order-Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) to Prioritize Water Resource Development Economic Scenarios in Pishin Catchment
Water is a basic demand of sustainable development in most regions of the world. The non-uniform temporal and spatial distribution of water resources will lead to water shortage in arid and semi-arid areas. Pishin catchment is one of the most important catchments in South-East Iran. The basin had been faced with consecutive droughts in recent years. On the other hand, water resources developmen...
متن کاملMaking Research Matter; Comment on “Public Spending on Health Service and Policy Research in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States: A Modest Proposal”
We offer a UK-based commentary on the recent “Perspective” published in IJHPM by Thakkar and Sullivan. We are sympathetic to the authors’ call for increased funding for health service and policy research (HSPR). However, we point out that increasing that investment – in any of the three countries they compare: Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom– will ipso facto not necessarily lea...
متن کاملA Modified Flood Severity Assessment for Enhanced Decision Support: Application to the Boscastle Flash Flood of 2004
A modified flash flood severity assessment is presented, based on scoring a set of factors according to their potential for generating extreme catchment-scale flooding. Improvements are made to the index through incorporation of parameter uncertainties, managing data absence, and clearer graphical communication. The motive for proposing these changes is to better inform flood managers during th...
متن کاملAssessment and analysis of the sensitivity of different methods for estimating of the reference crop evapotranspiration in a cold and moderate climate (Case study: Saqez catchment)
The phenomenon of evapotranspiration causes water and moisture losses from water, soil and vegetation levels. Due to the small amount of atmospheric precipitation and water resource constraints in Iran, it is important to calculate it through a suitable method. The present research attempts to evaluate the evapotranspiration reference crop (ETo) and present it in the form of zoning map as a bas...
متن کاملPotential site selection in ecotourism planning using spatial decision support tool
Northern areas of Pakistan have blessed with extremely beautiful natural landscapes, waterfalls, glaciated mountains, biodiversity rich valleys and forests and have extraordinary potential for ecotourism. Study is designed to propose potential sites for ecotourism in Kohistan, which is a least developed but biodiversity rich area of Pakistan. Poor planning and mismanagement of tourism practice...
